The choice to receive a penile prosthesis is a personal one.  And, it's common to have lots of questions.

Q:  Will it feel different during sexual intercourse?

A:  Men and their partners say that there is no change or difference during intercourse-including both sensitivity and ejaculation.

Q: Does a penile prosthesis allow for some romantic spontaneity?

A: With a penile prosthesis, there is no need for advance planning and preparation.  A penile prosthesis provides an immediate and reliable erection without a break in your romance.

Q: How will my penis look?

A: Results will vary from person to person.

Q: How long will I be in the hospital?

A: The procedure itself generally takes under one hour.  Sometimes local anesthesia is used, however, most procedures are done under general anesthesia and you can go home the same day or the next day.  This is referred to as a "23 hour stay."

Q: Will anyone be able to tell that I have an implant?

A: All parts of the prosthesis are completely concealed within your body.  No parts are visible from the outside.

Q: What is my hospital "out of pocket expense" for the penile prosthesis procedure?

A: Under Medicare's Hospital Outpatient Payment System, a Medicare beneficiary's copayment is now limited to $840.00 (for 2003).  If you have a Medigap plan or other supplemental coverage, this plan may pay the $840.00 copayment costs.  The $840.00 limited co-pay represents a substantial change from co-pays for similar procedures, prior to Medicare's new payment system.  This is a great value to those beneficiaries.
